Thrift Store Thirties

Most of my vintage style outfits, day-to-day, are not very complicated.

I  usually don’t try to look like I stepped right out of a movie from 1952 on a daily basis. There are a couple of reasons for this:

  1. I’ve got stuff to do,  and not all of it is really suited to wearing puffy dresses.
  2. I usually forget to wear accessories. I usually forget to change my earrings, honestly.
  3. Weather. Public transit.
  4. While I admire very curated vintage looks, I usually don’t go in for a complete “costumed” look, myself.

So this winter, I’m ending up wearing a lot of variations on this:

Take one sweater, and put it on top of another sweater. Add additional sweater if necessary.
Take one sweater, and put it on top of another sweater. Add additional sweater if necessary.

Straight skirt, fitted sweater, knee socks or tights, call it a day. I could add cardigan clips or a scarf or, you know, lipstick or something, if I were feeling fancy, but today I was not.

The details on this particular combination are:

Skirt: Brown wool, thrifted.
Sweater: Short sleeved, dark blue, narrow cables, vintage, thrifted.
Knee socks: Target
Leggings: (not pictured) Old Navy
Belt: Pay Half
Cardigan: Black, Anne Taylor (on super sale last year)
Loafers: Naturalizer, thrifted.

So, it’s mostly thrifted, and I think it looks kind of 1930s. Very sensible, demure, still femme without being fussy.

One can choose to just wear one sweater, I suppose.

I hesitate to post an outfit this simple, but I think it demonstrates that vintage style doesn’t have to be bold or expensive. You can pull together a look that makes you feel like Harriet Vane on a casual day at home out of things from the thrift store.
