Month of Vintage Underwear: DIY Pillowcase Pettipants

The thing eventually makes November a poor choice for Vintage Underwear Month is how cold one gets without tights.

I clip on my stockings, and adjust my skirt, and one good cold wind gets up in my business and I’m just done.

So one of my solutions (more solutions to come) is a little pair of undershorts. I chose the softest pillowcase at the thrift store, washed it really well, and then turned it into a silky pair of drawers.

A lovely pale blue pillowcase.

First, I settled on a pattern. I used the Wearing History Smooth Sailing trouser pattern as a base, taking a little volume out of the legs and ignoring the tucks and darts. Instead of a waistband, I just put in a draw string channel. This had mixed results–they’re not the most precise fit, and are a little low slung. Adding a waistband and a couple of darts would have solved this.

Turn the pillowcase back into fabric.

I ripped out all the seams. A tidy person would have then ironed the pillowcase, but I was not terribly worried about it. On went the pattern pieces.

Exactly the right amount.

Then, I cut it out, sewed them up, finished the seams, stuck in an elastic waist, and…

Wheeeeeeeee!
Wheeeeeeeee!

Flew away in my pettipants!

They are so comfy, their color makes them feel very 1920’s to me, and they will stop the wind from getting me. All told, the project took about 90 minutes.
